Okakarara Vocational Training Centre (OVTC) recently hosted two representatives from the Swakopmund Municipality Waste Management Division as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen collaboration in the development of innovative skills programmes.

The visiting colleagues, Mr Abel Kationdorozu and Mr Kluivert Mwanangombe, presented an update on the Circuwaste VET Africa Project, an initiative advancing sustainable waste management practices across the continent through targeted vocational training.

During their engagement, the team highlighted that Okakarara VTC has been identified as the pilot institution in Namibia for the implementation of the Circuwaste VET Africa training programme. This recognition underscores OVTC’s growing role in championing green skills development and contributing to national and regional sustainability objectives.

The OVTC Centre Manager and management team welcomed the proposal and expressed enthusiasm for the opportunities the project will bring to the institution, trainees, and the wider Okakarara community.

Discussions during the meeting explored:

  • The potential development of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between OVTC and the Swakopmund Municipality.
  • A structured work plan to guide the rollout of Waste Management training within the TVET system.
  • Opportunities for capacity building, knowledge exchange, and community-focused sustainability initiatives.

The envisioned partnership aligns with national efforts to strengthen TVET’s role in environmental stewardship and to equip youth with practical, future-oriented skills.

As talks progress, OVTC looks forward to contributing meaningfully to Namibia’s transition toward a circular economy, beginning with this pioneering Waste Management training pilot.
